Physical Education (PE)

PE is taught in mixed ability groups following the National Curriculum at Key Stages 2 and 3. All pupils receive 4 hours of PE every two weeks delivered by PE specialists. All pupils are encouraged to improve their health and fitness, responsibility towards others, awareness of personal safety and the safety of others, to enjoy school sport at their own level and ultimately make progress and improve performance.


We aim to offer a broad, balanced, ambitious and progressive programme of study to enable all pupils to develop physically, socially, cognitively and emotionally.

Through the curriculum and extra-curricular provision the key concepts of accurate replication, developing physical and mental capacity, development of skills / performance, outwitting opponents, problem solving, making informed choices about healthy lifestyle, and evaluating and improving underpin all learning. We offer opportunities for pupils to shine regardless of ability or experience.

The Curriculum

The curriculum consists of a variety of activities that enable all pupils to demonstrate and apply their core knowledge. The key knowledge concepts are embedded in the teaching of each activity.

Extra-Curricular Opportunities

The extra-curricular programme is extensive and aims to offer something for everyone. Clubs and teams are run at lunchtime and we have regular fixtures. Our sports teams and individuals enjoy success at local, regional and national levels. As part of the SWSSA, we regularly participate in School Games inclusion events such as NAK and Boccia.

The successful House System continues to flourish across a range of sporting activities such as inter-house football, netball, tri pair’s rugby, softball and rounders. This enables more pupils to experience competition and helps raise the standard of our school teams.

In Year 8, pupils are offered the opportunity to become a Young Leader. This very popular and oversubscribed nationally recognised qualification teaches the successful applicants the importance of organisation, communication, teamwork and respect delivered through the medium of sport.

Pupils are given the opportunity to play sport in Spain and Gibraltar on the Sports Tour which takes place every two years. Netball and rugby teams play fixtures against Spanish schools, clubs and international schools.


When pupils leave Bredon Hill Academy in Year 8 they should be able to:
  • Replicate key skills in a range of activity areas with fluency, consistency, accuracy, control and with good timing to outwit opponents in both team and individual sports. 
  • Recognise and understand the lifelong benefits of physical activity and seek ways to maintain a physically healthy lifestyle making it a regular part of their lives.
  • Outwit opponents using a selection of embedded key skills.
  • Exercise safely and effectively with consideration and empathy for others.
  • Understand and recognise the various roles that exist within sport such as officiating, coaching, and organising.
  • Recognise areas of own and others strengths and areas for improvement in order to evaluate and improve performance.
  • Demonstrate a wealth of transferable skills, as well as high aspirations and self-belief, having experienced a broad, rich and deep curriculum. 
  • Demonstrate an improved physical and mental capacity to perform at maximum levels in a variety of activities. 
  • Make and apply decisions that have a positive impact on performance.
  • Solve problems both independently and as part of a group to impact on performance.
