2016-2017

Use of Catch-up Funding 2016 - 2017

Maths Department

71 students did not achieve the expected standard in Maths in 2016.

The main support mechanism put in place to support these students was smaller class sizes. Two extra classes were created for year 7 pupil; one extra class for the X side and another for the Y side. This meant that we had 4 teaching groups on each side (8 teaching groups in total). We based this decision on recommendations from the Education Endowment Foundation’s Teaching and Learning Toolkit.

The significant reduction in class sizes for those needing extra support allowed teachers to give more focus to each student, increasing the amount of high quality feedback and one to one attention.

Of these 71 students, 67 had data available from our GL assessments to measure progress during Year 7, and 100% of them made expected progress. 48% made greater than expected progress.

We identified a further 29 students who we felt needed further, more intensive support. With these students, we arranged additional intervention classes in groups of 8 and 9. These students had an additional maths session every fortnight with a maths specialist.

Of these 29 students, 100% of them made expected progress over the academic year. 55% of these students made greater than expected progress.

English Department

Similar to Maths, the main support mechanism put in place was smaller class sizes. We created two additional groups in Year 7, one for the X side and one for the Y side. This gave a total of eight English teaching groups for Year 7. The additional groups in English were taught by specialist teaching assistants who adapted the curriculum to meets the individual needs of the students in the group. This was closely monitored by the subject manager for English.

Reading

43 students did not achieve the expected standard in Reading in 2016.

Of these 43 students, 34 had data available from our GL assessments to measure progress during Year 7. 56% made expected progress and 6% of these made greater than expected progress.

Writing

44 students did not achieve the expected standard in Writing in 2016.

Of these 44 students, 38 had data available from our GL assessments to measure progress during Year 7. 71% made expected progress and 8% of these made greater than expected progress.
